Margaret Lloyd is a visual artist and a poet. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Leeds, England, and is Professor Emeritus of Springfield College. A Welsh immigrant influenced by the landscape of Wales, Lloyd began her visual artistic life as a watercolor painter, then moved into working with slate, and is now immersed in painting with oil. She has held several exhibitions, won awards, and published paintings and painting/poem pairs in national and international journals.
Artist Statement for Intimate Worlds
I am always searching for the places that finally emerge in the paintings—the wild expanse of sea, of sky and wind, of land—the ancient world, loved places, internal landscapes. At times the landscapes aspire to evoke the longer reaches of geological time and the natural world, in which cultures are scarcely evident. The paintings aim to be as organic as nature and to be intimate, meditative, and evocative of emotion. In my latest work, a new element is prominent—that which Celtic tradition refers to as “thin places”—places where we feel that the veil between this world and the otherworld is permeable—evoking a sense of the sacred and mystery.
